Goan puff pastry patties - vegetarian

After my husband became vegetarian I experimented with many variations to meat that would satisfy my need for the consistency and flavors that lend themselves to meat.

Patties are a traditional Goan appetizer that is served as both meat or vegetarian snacks.  In this recipe I used the traditional Goan minced meat spices so that the flavors can be enjoyed by both vegetarians and non-vegetarians alike.  Many Catholic Goans are refraining from eating red meats because of health problems but this recipe is a good alternative, and the flavors and texture are surprisingly misleading.  Everyone can enjoy these Goan "meat-less" patties!

Ingredients

vegetarian mince meat recipe
ready made puff pastry
1 egg

Method

I used pre-rolled puff pastry.  Preheat the oven to 425 F. Line a baking tray with parchment paper and place the puff pastry on it.

Keep all your ingredients handy.  Whisk the egg in a bowl with a fork and add 1 tablespoon of water. Mix well. This is your egg wash

With a pizza cutter or sharp knife cut the pastry equally into 12 squares

Put a heaped teaspoon of mince in the center of a square.

Using a ear bud or small brush, brush the edges of the square with the egg wash to help the edges stick

Fold the square over carefully and seal the edges.

Brush the top of the patty with egg wash.

With a fork press down on the edges to seal and form a pattern on each patty

When all twelve patties are ready, put it in the pre-heated oven for 10-15 minutes until puffy and nicely browned

Remove and serve.
