Granny's Meat - a mild Goan beef curry dish

This dish was a favorite when we were kids.  Not too spicy and passed down from my maternal grandmother ( Maria Oliveira) - hence the name Granny's meat. Leaving out the green chilly in this recipe will omit the pungency and makes this flavorful beef dish very child friendly.

Ingredients

1 pound beef chopped in cubes or sliced in small pieces
spice powders
1/2 teaspoon pepper
1 teaspoon garlic
1 teaspoon cumin
1 teaspoon turmeric
1/4 teaspoon clove
1/2 teaspoon cinnamon

1 medium onion chopped
1 medium tomato chopped
about 1 inch piece of ginger finely minced or grated
1 green chilly or more to taste
(optional)

Method

Salt the meat according to preference.  I used 1 level teaspoon.
Add all the ground spices to the chopped meat in a glass container.

Mix the spices and well and  leave on one side.

Cut your onions, tomato and ginger.  Heat a non-stick pan on the stove with a tablespoon of oil.  Add the onions, tomatoes and ginger. Stir.

Add the meat and stir well to mix.  Leave on medium heat to cook down and let the juices that come out evaporate.  Watch so it does not burn and stir occasionally.  Cook until the vegetables are soft and the water that runs out is almost dry.

After about 10 minutes the tomatoes and the onions will have softened.  There will not be much liquid in the pan.

Now add 1/2 to 1 cup of water.  Stir well.  Add the chilly which has been slit and let cook for about 5 - 10 minutes more until the contents are fully cooked.

Add one teaspoon of vinegar and 1/2 teaspoon of sugar. Stir to mix.  Taste and add more salt if needed.

Garnish with fresh coriander if you want.  Serve with hot rice.
Note: You can add potatoes and carrots to this dish while cooking if you like.
